KK's KOKODA TRAIL TRAINING
Preparing to walk the Kokoda Trail is a serious business. Do it well and you will have a great trip: sell yourself short and not only will you not enjoy yourself you could place your health at risk, affect the safety of others and perhaps even end up a medevac statistic or worse.
At Komplete Kokoda/Kokoda Historical we believe you need at least three (3) months preparation before taking on this trek. Once you have paid your deposit for one of our Kokoda Treks we will send you our three month Kokoda Training program.
This program consists of lots of walking, hill climbing and/or stairwork along with upper body strengthening exercises. (Forget about running down hills!! - it wrecks your knees!!).If you are overweight you will have an extra challenge in preparing for this trip. Unless you are super fit even though carrying this weight, you will need to set out to reach a suitable weight by the time of your departure. You should talk to your doctor about this. If you are just a little overweigh our 'rule-of thumb' is to lose at least what you will be carrying on your backpack. If you intened to pay the extra for a Personal Porter, which we recommend, that will mean losing about 8kg. If you intend to carry your own pack, that will be about 18kg.
We recommmend that you have a THOROUGH MEDICAL CHECK UP before signing up for this journey. Our travel partners at Harvey World Travel Surfers Paradise will send you forms to complete that include a requirement for a letter from your GP stating you are fit to do something as difficult as the Kokoda Track, but for anyone with pre-existing conditions or over the age of forty, a full check up should be something you undergo for your own peace of mind. It is compulsory to take out Comprehensive Travel Insurance ( included in our Package price with a surcharge for those aged over 49yrs or anyone with pre-existing conditions) and vital that you fill out and return all forms relevant to this as soon as you receive them, honestly and accurately.
Members of our staff will try to contact you either by phone or email at least twice during the three month period in the lead up to your departure to see how you are travelling with the program. We always recommend you take it easy in the week before you leave by getting plenty of rest, eating well and just doing some gentle walk or other exercise to keep muscles flexible.
KNEES and ANKLES will need to be strong to take on the Kokoda Trail. If you have any weaknesses in these areas, get them thoroughly checked before signing up. The biggest challenge most people find is the humidity and getting the fluid intake right - not too much water, not too little. Our experienced guides will keep an eye on you in this area.
Completing the trek is as much a mental challenge as it is a physical challenge. Sometime the fittest people pack it in because they thought it would be a breeze for them and it is not. The Kokoda Trail is no place for egos. We are continually surprised at the people who do it easy and those who do it tough - not always the ones you would expect
So prepare yourself to think positively, laugh through your problems, work as a team with other trekkers so you can support each other through the bad times and remember - PNG is the 'land of the unexpected', the 'land of hurry up and wait', the 'land where time stands still'.
Visit the Travel Doctor or at least a doctor with some experience in or knowledge of Tropical Medicine to be sure your are prepared with all the correct medicines and that all relevant travel warnings have been checked. Anti Malarial tablets are vital and there is currently a Cholera warning for PNG so seek medical advice on this.
The Gear and Requirements list that is included in your Welcome Kit when you sign on for one of our treks gives a detailed list of all the things you will need in your First Aid Kit to make your trek less stressful.
So - put in the time and effort to prepare both mentally and physically and you will have a wonderful time and a life changing experience.
